East Side Gallery

The biggest reason why the East Side Gallery is on the list of places to visit in Berlin is that it is the surviving part of the Berlin Wall. The gallery exhibits the concrete traces of the painful and turbulent periods of the city that lasted until recently.

With the Berlin Wall built by the Soviet Union in 1961, the city almost lost its identity. Berlin, which was truly reborn with the fall of the wall in 1989, now presents various remnants of this shameful structure in different places. Here is the East Side Gallery, an intact 1.3 km long section of the Berlin Wall.

The transformation of the wall into an open-air gallery is interesting in itself. With the work of graffiti artists, this place has been turned into a monument, an area where freedom is celebrated. Germans and millions from other countries celebrate Berlin's rise from the ashes.

I definitely recommend you to see the East Side Gallery, one of the most popular symbols of peace and freedom in the world.

Note: One of the most comfortable ways to go to East Side Gallery is by city bus. I reached the area in 15 minutes by bus from Alexanderplatz. After getting off at the beginning of the wall and visiting all the pictures, you can take the bus back to Alexanderplatz from where you got off, or you can easily reach anywhere you want with the nearby metro stops.
